What Is VUL?
Insurance + Investment in One Vehicle
Variable Universal Life (VUL) insurance is a form of permanent life insurance that allows policyholders to allocate a portion of their premiums into investment sub-accounts — funds that invest in equities, bonds, and other assets, similar to mutual funds.
The "variable" in VUL refers to the variability of investment returns — unlike whole life's guaranteed cash value growth, VUL sub-accounts fluctuate with market performance. This creates the potential for significantly higher cash value accumulation in strong markets.
The "universal" component refers to flexible premiums — you can pay more or less depending on your financial situation, within policy guidelines.
For high earners who have maximized their 401(k) and IRA contributions, VUL offers an additional tax-advantaged accumulation vehicle with no contribution limits, no required minimum distributions (RMDs), and tax-free access via policy loans.
Ideal VUL Candidates
High earners who have maximized 401(k), IRA, and other tax-advantaged accounts
Business owners seeking tax-deferred accumulation beyond qualified plan limits
Investors comfortable with market risk who want both protection and growth
Clients with a 10+ year investment horizon who can absorb market volatility
Those seeking supplemental retirement income with no RMDs and no contribution limits
Estate planning clients who want a permanent death benefit with growth potential
How It Works
The VUL Mechanics
Pay Flexible Premiums
Unlike whole life, VUL allows you to vary your premium payments — contributing more in high-income years and less in lean years, within policy limits.
Allocate to Sub-Accounts
A portion of each premium (after insurance charges) flows into investment sub-accounts — diversified funds similar to mutual funds, covering equities, bonds, and money market options.
Tax-Deferred Growth
Sub-account gains accumulate tax-deferred inside the policy. Unlike a brokerage account, you owe no annual capital gains tax on investment growth.
Access Cash Value
Access accumulated cash value through tax-free policy loans or withdrawals (up to your cost basis). This is a powerful retirement income supplement strategy.
Maintain Death Benefit
Regardless of sub-account performance (within policy guidelines), your beneficiaries receive the death benefit — providing a guaranteed floor of protection.
Balanced Assessment
Strengths & Considerations
Growth Potential
Strength
Market-linked sub-accounts can significantly outperform guaranteed whole life cash value in strong markets
Consideration
Sub-account values can decline in bear markets, potentially requiring additional premiums
Flexibility
Strength
Flexible premiums and adjustable death benefit adapt to changing financial circumstances
Consideration
Complexity requires active monitoring; improper management can cause policy lapse
Tax Efficiency
Strength
Tax-deferred growth and tax-free loans make VUL one of the most tax-efficient accumulation vehicles available

If the policy lapses with outstanding loans, those loans become taxable income
Retirement Strategy
Strength
Supplement 401(k) and IRA distributions with tax-free policy loans — no contribution limits
