What Is Whole Life?

Permanent Protection That Builds Wealth

Whole life insurance is a permanent life insurance policy that provides coverage for your entire life — as long as premiums are paid. Unlike term insurance, it does not expire at age 65 or 70 when health risks are highest.

Every premium payment builds cash value inside the policy at a guaranteed rate. This cash value grows tax-deferred and can be accessed at any time through policy loans — without triggering a taxable event.

Vanderbilt Financial Group whole life policyholders also receive annual dividend distributions, which can be used to purchase paid-up additions (increasing both death benefit and cash value), reduce future premiums, or accumulate at interest.

Core Benefits

Guaranteed Death Benefit

Your beneficiaries receive a guaranteed, tax-free death benefit regardless of when you pass — whether at 45 or 95. The policy never expires as long as premiums are paid.

Guaranteed Cash Value Growth

Unlike term insurance, whole life builds cash value at a guaranteed rate set by Vanderbilt Financial Group. This accumulates tax-deferred and is accessible via policy loans at any time.

Annual Dividends

Vanderbilt Financial Group has paid dividends to whole life policyholders every year since 1872. While not guaranteed, these dividends can purchase additional paid-up insurance, reduce premiums, or be taken as cash.

Tax Advantages

Cash value grows tax-deferred. Death benefit is income-tax free. Policy loans are not taxable events. Whole life is one of the few financial instruments that offers all three tax advantages simultaneously.

Living Benefits

Whole life cash value can be accessed during your lifetime — as a tax-free supplement to retirement income, to fund a business venture, to cover an emergency, or to pay for long-term care through accelerated benefit riders.

Estate Planning Tool

An Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust (ILIT) funded by a whole life policy is the most efficient way to transfer wealth to heirs — outside of your taxable estate, with no probate and no income tax.

Strategic Applications

When Whole Life Is the Right Tool

Whole life insurance is uniquely positioned to solve problems that no other financial instrument addresses as efficiently.

Supplemental Retirement Income

Withdraw cash value tax-free in retirement to reduce reliance on taxable accounts and lower your Medicare premium brackets.

Estate Equalization

When one heir receives a business and another receives cash, whole life equalizes distributions without forced asset sales.

Funding an ILIT

An Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust holds the policy outside your estate, providing tax-free, probate-free liquidity to your heirs.

Business Buy-Sell Agreements

Partners fund buy-sell agreements with whole life — ensuring the surviving partner can purchase the deceased partner's share immediately.

Key-Person Insurance

Businesses protect themselves against the financial loss of a key executive or owner by holding a whole life policy on that individual.

Charitable Legacy

A whole life policy can be assigned to a charity — providing a tax deduction on premiums and a significant gift at death.
